PMS and lemon balm
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a very common disorder in women of reproductive age, affecting 75% of women with a higher rate in younger women.
Symptoms can be physical or psychological and include food cravings, fatigue, depression, petulance, acne, water retention, irritability, and forgetfulness.
A lot can be done to ease these symptoms but it is great to see that scientists have studied the positive effect of one of the herb we are using: lemon balm (Melissa officinalis).
They conducted a double-blind, randomised, placebo - controlled trial on 100 schoolgirls aged 14 – 17 years and investigated the effectiveness of lemon balm in reducing PMS symptoms with great results.
They found that the intensity of physical, psychological and social symptoms such as stress, anxiety and depression, was significantly reduced in the Melissa group compared to placebo as a result of Melissa’s anxiolytic and spasmolytic effects.
So for all women suffering from this common syndrome, nature and naturopathy can help!
